How Does a Flow Rack Work?

A flow rack uses gravity and angled roller or wheel tracks so that product loaded from the back automatically slides forward to the pick face as items are removed from the front -- this is called first-in-first-out (FIFO) flow. It's widely used in order-picking and kitting operations where inventory rotation and pick speed both matter.

What's the Benefit of Flow Racks Over Standard Shelving?

Flow racks enforce FIFO rotation automatically (important for anything with a shelf life or lot-tracking requirement) and speed up picking because the next item is always presented at the front -- no reaching into a deep shelf. The tradeoff is cost and a narrower range of suitable SKUs (it works best for cartons, totes, or uniformly-sized product, not loose or irregular items).

Can Flow Rack Lanes Be Reconfigured?

Most flow rack systems are modular, with lane width and track angle adjustable to fit different carton or tote sizes. Used systems may need their track/roller condition checked before reconfiguration -- ask your rep about the specific unit's lane adjustability before buying for a reconfiguration project.

Are Used Flow Racks a Good Option, or Should I Buy New?

Used flow racks are a strong option when the roller tracks and frame are in good condition -- the mechanical wear items (rollers, bearings) are what to inspect closely. New makes more sense when you need a specific lane count or carton-size spec that used inventory doesn't currently have in stock.
