Used Bulk Bags & Super Sacks (FIBC): Sizes, SWL & Types

Bulk bags, super sacks and FIBCs (flexible intermediate bulk containers) are the same product with three names. They are woven polypropylene bags, usually built for about one ton of dry material such as grain, seed, powders, salt, minerals and pellets. Buying used saves money on any job where the bag only needs to hold a product once or twice. This guide covers the sizes in our listings, the top and bottom types, how construction affects strength, and what to ask about food-grade bags.

Common Bulk Bag Sizes

Sizes below are from our current used-bag listings. Volume is the nominal length x width x height. A filled bag holds a little less.

Footprint (in) Heights listed (in) Nominal volume (cu ft) Used price per bag*
35 x 35 44-50 32-35 $8.00-$10.00
37 x 37 63 50 $4.22
38 x 32 (circular) 64 45 $6.50-$7.50
40 x 40 40-45 37-42 $8.00-$8.50
41 x 38 63 57 $7.50
42 x 42 45 46 $4.50
43 x 43 (coated) 80 86 $12.50

*First-page used prices on 2026-10-06. Prices change, so check the listing. New bags on our bulk bags page ran about $11.50 to $19.65 on the same date.

Safe working load (SWL) is printed on the bag's label and is set by the manufacturer. Our listings don't always state it. Typical single-bag SWLs run from about 1,000 lb up to 4,400 lb, so read the label or ask the seller before you load.

Top & Bottom Types

Type What it is Best for
Duffle top Wide skirt at the top, tie closed Easy filling, dust control
Spout top Smaller fill spout Controlled filling lines
Open top Open at the top, no closure Simple filling, no dust concern
Spout bottom Discharge spout at the bottom Controlled pouring into a hopper
Flat bottom Closed base, no spout Material you scoop or tip out

Construction

  • U-panel, 4-panel, circular and baffle. U-panel and 4-panel bags are sewn from separate pieces. Circular (tubular) bags have no side seams. Baffle bags have inner panels that hold the bag square so it stacks and fits better.
  • Coated vs uncoated. A coating blocks moisture and fine dust. Our 43 x 43 x 80 in listing is coated.
  • Liners. A liner protects fine powders or food-grade product. Ask whether a used bag has one.
  • Safety factor. FIBCs are rated with a safety factor of 5:1 for single-trip bags and 6:1 for multi-trip bags (ISO 21898). A single-trip bag is built for one use. Don't reuse it for heavy loads.

Food-Grade Bulk Bags

Buyers often ask for food-grade bags. Ask the seller: what the bag held before, whether it has a liner, and whether the bag has a food-grade certification. A used bag that held a non-food product shouldn't be used for food. Contact the seller through the listing for these details.

New vs Used

Used bags are fine for non-food products, one-way shipments and storage, when the bag is clean and has no tears or loose stitching. Buy new if you need a certified food-grade bag, a fully known load rating or a bag that will be used for hazardous materials.

FAQ

What size is a 1 ton bulk bag?

Most 1-ton bags have a footprint around 35 x 35 to 43 x 43 in and are 40 to 80 in tall. The right size depends on how dense your material is, so check the SWL label as well as the dimensions.

What does SWL mean?

SWL is safe working load, the heaviest load the bag is rated to carry. It is printed on the bag label.

Are super sacks reusable?

Some are. A 6:1 safety factor bag is rated for multiple trips. A 5:1 bag is meant for one trip. Inspect any used bag for tears, damaged straps and loose stitching before you reuse it.

Can you buy food-grade bulk bags used?

Sometimes. Ask the seller what the bag held, whether it has a liner and whether it is certified. If you can't confirm those, buy new.

Can I sell my used bulk bags here?

Yes, list them for free on Container Exchanger. See bulk bags wanted for what buyers are asking for.
