Hoppers & Silos FAQs
What's the Difference Between a Material Hopper and a Steel Silo?
A hopper is a funnel-shaped container -- often portable, sized for a forklift or crane to move -- used for short-term bulk material handling, staging, or dispensing into a process line. A silo is a large, typically stationary, vertical storage structure built for longer-term bulk storage of powders, pellets, grain, or other free-flowing material. If you're moving material around a facility, you likely want a hopper; if you're storing large volumes long-term, you want a silo.
What Materials Are Typically Stored in Steel Silos?
Steel silos commonly store dry bulk materials that flow freely -- plastic pellets and resin, grain and agricultural feed, sand and aggregate, cement and other dry construction materials, and various industrial powders. The right silo design (cone angle, discharge gate size, material of construction) depends heavily on how free-flowing and abrasive the material is, so tell your rep what you're storing before you buy.
Are Used Hoppers and Silos Structurally Safe to Buy?
We inspect structural condition before listing, but a buyer handling bulk material storage should always have their own engineer sign off on load capacity and anchoring for their specific site and material before installation -- that's standard practice industry-wide, not a reflection of any particular unit's condition. Ask your rep for available documentation on a listing before you commit.
Do You Help Arrange Freight for Large Hoppers or Silos?
Yes -- we arrange freight nationwide, including specialized oversize-load transport for large hoppers and silos. Because these units are often large and irregularly shaped, get a freight quote before finalizing a purchase so you know the landed cost, not just the unit price.
