Collapsible Bulk Containers: Sizes, Specs & Used Prices

Collapsible bulk containers (also called folding bulk shipping containers or collapsible pallet containers) fold down to roughly a third of their upright height when empty, cutting return-trip freight and storage costs versus rigid pallet boxes. Below are the standard footprints, inside dimensions, collapsed heights, weights and capacities buyers ask about most, plus current new and used price ranges.

Standard Collapsible Bulk Container Footprint & Dimension Table

Outside dimensions (OD) are the footprint you plan floor space and truck slots around. Inside dimensions (ID) are what actually holds product — always confirm ID before ordering liners, dividers, or automation fixtures. Capacity and collapsed height vary by wall gauge and manufacturer (Uline, Orbis, Buckhorn, Monoflo and others all sell these three footprints), so we show commonly seen ranges rather than a single spec.

Footprint (OD, in) Inside Dimensions (ID, approx.) Collapsed Height  Empty Weight Capacity
48 x 45 x 34

commonly~44 x 41 x 33

commonly 9–10" folded commonly 90–115 lb  commonly 1,500–2,500 lb
32 x 30 x 34 commonly ~28 x 26 x 33 commonly 9–10" folded commonly 55–70 lb  commonly 1,500–2,000 lb
40 x 48 x 34 commonly ~36 x 44 x 33 commonly 9–10" folded commonly 85–100 lb  commonly 1,500–2,200 lb

48x45x34 is the most common collapsible bulk container size in the market and the closest match to a standard 48x40 GMA pallet footprint with overhang for a rim. 32x30x34 is the compact option for narrow-aisle racking or lighter-duty picks. 40x48x34 is a common alternate footprint from suppliers like Orbis and DuraGreen for lines already tooled around a 40x48 base. Capacity swings inside each footprint mainly by wall thickness — general-purpose walls top out lower, heavy-duty/extra-duty walls carry more before deflection.

Vented vs. Solid Wall, and Drop-Door Options

  • Solid wall — full enclosure, best for dusty or fine-particulate product and for stacking outdoors under a roof; no debris shakeout.
  • Vented wall — slotted or perforated sides for airflow around produce, parts that need to off-gas, or product that needs to dry between cycles; not for loose fines.
  • Drop-door (access door) — one or two hinged panels near the base that swing or slide open so product can be gravity-fed or hand-scooped out without tipping the whole container; the most requested option on used listings because it speeds unload at the dock.
  • 4-way entry base — lets a forklift or pallet jack pick the container from any side, not just two; worth confirming on used units since some older bins are 2-way only.

New vs. Used Price Ranges

Condition

Typical Price Range

(per unit)

Notes
New, standard grade commonly $250–$400 Lead times vary by manufacturer; standard wall/capacity
New, heavy-duty grade commonly $350–$550 Higher capacity rating, reinforced base/hinges
Used, good condition commonly $120–$250 Structurally sound, minor cosmetic wear, hinges/doors functional
Used, as-is/economy commonly $60–$150 Functional but visibly worn; verify hinge and floor condition before buying

Buying used typically saves 40–60% versus new for the same footprint and grade. Actual price depends on region, quantity, color, and whether lids and dollies are included — always confirm those extras are part of the listed price, not sold separately.

How to Measure What You Have

The question we hear most from buyers replacing or matching an existing fleet: "How do I know which size I actually have?" Use these steps before you order:

Diagram showing how to measure a collapsible bulk container pole-to-pole for inside dimensions versus outside footprint

  • Measure OD first. Outside footprint (length x width) at the base tells you rack slot and truck-stacking fit — this is the number in most listing titles (e.g., "48x45x34").
  • Measure ID pole-to-pole. With the container upright, measure inside from the inner face of one corner post to the inner face of the opposite corner post, not wall-to-wall at the widest bulge. Pole-to-pole is the true usable capacity dimension and the number automation, liners, and divider vendors need.
  • Measure collapsed height with the lid on. If you stack collapsed units in a trailer or on a mezzanine, measure height with the lid and any dolly attached — not just the bare folded shell.
  • Check the base for a molded size stamp. Most manufacturers mold the model number or OD dimensions into the base or a corner post; this is the fastest way to identify make and size if the container has no label.
  • Note door count and side. Single vs. double drop-door, and which wall it's on, affects whether a used unit fits your existing dock flow.

FAQ

What size is a standard collapsible bulk container?
48x45x34" is the most common footprint, followed by 40x48x34" and 32x30x34" for lighter or narrower-aisle applications.

How much does a collapsible bulk container hold?
Commonly 1,500–2,500 lb depending on footprint and wall grade — heavy-duty versions of the same footprint carry more than general-purpose versions.

How short do they fold down?
Collapsed height is commonly 9–10" for standard 34"-tall units, roughly a third of the upright height, which is the main freight and storage savings driver versus rigid bulk boxes.

Vented or solid — which do I need?
Solid wall for fine particulate or outdoor stacking; vented wall for produce, parts needing airflow, or anything that needs to dry between uses.

Is buying used worth it?
Yes for most warehouse and shipping use cases — used collapsible bulk containers commonly run 40–60% less than new for the same footprint and grade, and a functional used unit performs the same job as new once hinges and drop-doors are confirmed working.

Do all 48x45x34 containers interchange?
Footprint (OD) matching doesn't guarantee interchange — confirm inside dimensions pole-to-pole, door style, and hinge/lid compatibility across manufacturers before mixing a fleet.
